In the framework of the project LIFE IGIC – Improvement of Green Infrastructure in agroecosystems: reconnecting natural areas by countering habitat fragmentation – LIFE16 NAT/GR/000575, green infrastructure establishment was implemented by planting hundreds of fruit and forest trees, shrubs, aromatic and other perennial plants, took place during November 2021 in the Life IGIC pilot olive groves. The plantings aims to the improvement of green infrastructure in Mesara valley as well as to the improvement of the olive groves biodiversity, the enhancement of agroecosystems services and to the provision of a basis for reconnecting existing natural areas.
The plantings implemented by Dr. Emmanouel Kambourakis, Life IGIC coordinator and director of the Laboratory of Olive and Agroecological Production Systems (Department of Agriculture, Hellenic Mediterranean University) and the members of the project team Dr Nikolaos Volakakis, supervisor of agro-technical tasks, Mr. Ioannis Zografakis, PhD student and Mr. Aggelos Chiras, Mr. Dionisis Kontogiannis and Mr. Giorgos Delidakis, undergraduate students as well as other project staff.
