In the framework of the project LIFE IGIC – Improvement of Green Infrastructure in agroecosystems: reconnecting natural areas by countering habitat fragmentation – LIFE16 NAT/GR/000575, educational talk and visit at the olive grove of Hellenic Mediterranean University took place in the 22th of February 2022.The talk focused on the flora diversity of olive groves and especially at the species with edible value for the local and worldwide community.
The topic was presented by Mr Dr. Emmanouel Kambourakis, Life IGIC coordinator and director of the Laboratory of Olive and Agroecological Production Systems (Department of Agriculture, Hellenic Mediterranean University), who indicated the importance of green infrastructure in olive groves for the conservation and restoration of the local biodiversity as well as for the sustainability of agroecosystems. Additional insight was given by a member of the laboratory, Antonia Vogiatzaki, fully conversant with edible flora, who presented and indicated the edible flora of olive groves to the participants, as well as Mr. Yiannis Markakis, director of the Cretan open-air museum «Lychnostatis» who underlined the importance of edible flora to the intangible cultural heritage and Cretan folk tradition.
